The Lands of Freedom

casanova posted in Sleeping beauty (open) Apr 9, 2019 21:46:31 GMT
Free of predators and tucked away behind large forests lies three expansive clearings. The forests surrounding the clearings are thick, but not too difficult to traverse. Terrain here is mostly flat, with the occasional small hills. Lush with tall grass and several strong rivers feeding into a large lake located at the center of this area, this place has proved to be a popular spot for those looking for a homeland and those who are only wandering. However, it is best to beware, as mares may fall victim to force-claiming here, though the practice of force-claiming has seemed to dwindle over the years.

These open lands are home to two of the largest lakes known to Atera. Similar in shape, it's no surprise how the lakes received their name. Grass here is short, but very sweet to the taste. The lands are eerily quiet with scattered trees here and there. The terrain is almost impeccably flat and is the nesting place of many herbivores such as deer and rabbits. A few foxes and coyotes roam the lands, though they pose no threat to equines and other large game. These lands are relatively safe, but wolves have been known to wander in from time to time when food becomes scarce in their territories. No force-claiming may take place within these lands.

Sweetwater Hollow is a large valley-like area located just outside large mountain-ranges. The valleys here are excessively deep, making the terrain somewhat hard to traverse. While some valleys slope gently towards the bottom, most of them are extremely steep and have caused many an equine to lose their footing if they are not careful. While tumbling to the bottom isn't necessarily deadly to an equine, it can cause some severe injury in extreme cases, but will mostly just cause some bruising and soreness. Grass here is tall, though a bit flavorless compared to the surrounding areas. However, as the name implies, the scarce rivers that flow through the valleys contain the sweetest water known to Atera. Sweetwater Hollow is home to bachelor stallions and mares who do not wish to be part of the herd life, or those who have been kicked from their homes. With no marked territories here, it is not uncommon for small squabbles to erupt among the equines choosing to inhabit this area. No claiming may take place here, though some equines do sometimes travel in small groups of three to five.

The Black Forest is a place that most tend to be wary of. Vegetation is scarce since the trees here grow in abundance and tend to be close together. The canopies are so thick that very little sunlight is offered to the ground, which is how this forest got it's name. With such low visibility and such a large forest to traverse, it's no surprise why these lands are known for being so deadly. The only break in the denseness of this forest is by the massive river that cuts through the East most area of these lands. The water moves quickly with a current strong enough to drown even the mightiest of shire horses. Many an equine has found themselves lost in this forest, usually dying from starvation; if they're not eaten first. The Black Forest is seeping with danger, from giant bears, to small poisonous snakes. While most avoid these lands, there are those who come here believing they are stronger than Mother Nature herself. Few equines have made it through these lands and lived to tell the tale. Even fewer have come here with the intent to survive. Force-claiming may happen here; that is, if you make it out alive.

The Pine Woods are named for the copious amount of pine trees that grow in the area. This wooded area is not dense like The Black Forest. Instead, the trees are fairly spaced, allowing vegetation to grow below, though it does not grow thickly. There are a few small clearings scattered throughout the territory, most of them home to ponds and short grasses. While other species of trees do inhabit these woods, pines are the most common, giving these lands a pleasant pine smell. There are many hills and dips in the land, but none of them make travel difficult. Large boulders and clumps of rocks are dotted throughout the area, making it the perfect territory for cougars. Small packs of wolves can also be found in the area, though they typically pursue smaller prey such as small species of deer, large rabbits, and boars. Black bears also wander the area, but are usually seen hunting large fish from the very tiny rivers that flow from the ponds. No force-claiming may happen here.

Sitting along the coastline of the Indian Ocean and stretching across nearly thirteen miles of terrain is the Kalahi Beach. Warm, golden sand welcomes all who come here, greeted by the salty sea air and a soft breeze. Not much grass grows here, but what does is tall and thick and retains enough fresh water to quench the thirst of the beach's visitors. A mighty plateau sits over looking the ocean and beach, offering a grand view to those who wish to make the exhausting climb to the top. Many have said it's very worth the effort and even make trips here specifically to watch the sunsets or play in the waves. Free of predators of all kind, theses lands are among the safest in all of Atera. No force-claiming may take place here.

Getting their name from the many willow trees that inhabit this area, there is a sense of peace and tranquilitythat washes over all who enter. Mist provides cooling to the mares giving birth here. Moss covers the ground of the birthing caves, providing a soft spot for mares to lay. The willows drape their branches over the entrances, to provide a privacy curtain. There are several caves within these lands and plenty of fresh, sweet grass to fill an equine. Slow moving creeks babble softly, almost as if whispering encouraging words to soon-to-be mothers. These are Atera's birthing grounds. Stallions are only allowed inside if invited by their mare, otherwise, these lands are limited to birthing mares and their new young only. Mares may stay as long as they see fit before making the trek back to their homeland with peace of mind that they are completely safe from all harm here with their newborns.

Located deep within Atera are the Kanawha Falls. Cascading down from a high cliff, the water filters into a massive, crystal clear lake. Thick, sweet grass covers the ground and trees grow high, providing much of the land with shade. Animals of all kinds frequent the falls for a refreshing drink. Behind the curtains of the falls is a cave with a moss-covered floor, perfect for a nap or night's rest. If you choose to climb to the top of the falls, you will be greeted by a large river that feeds the falls. Very few trees grow atop the cliff, and the grass here isn't as sweet as down below, but the stunning view alone is enough to make up for it. No force-claiming may take place within these lands.

Getting their name from the large packs of wolves that roam here, the Wolfsbane Trails are surprisingly safe. Packs seem to only attack during winter months, when other game here becomes scarce. The trails twist and turn throughout the thick brush and trees, with smaller, less visible trails cutting through the territory. If you can navigate well, a babbling brook can be found deep within the area. There aren't many areas for good grazing, but some short patches of grass can be found if you look hard enough.

Sitting atop a large mountain is a hard flatland known as Devil's Peak. It is the highest point in Atera, allowing one to see for miles across the ever-expanding world in all directions. Even with the loose footing coming up the mountain, the climb is easy enough, with the true challenge being what awaits at the top. These rocky lands are the battlegrounds of Atera. Many have met their fate at the peak of this mountaintop, and it is apparent by the appalling scent of death that batters the senses as you enter the territory. While most battles here are to the death, there is almost an equal amount of battles had here that result in both parties being able to leave this area, though it is not without a few new battle scars.

The Territories

LadyLux posted in Valhalla - Valkyrie's Land Claim Apr 3, 2019 4:58:19 GMT
The grasslands are large, flat territories made up of tall, lush grass. Most of the areas here have very few patches of trees, with some boasting slightly more wooded areas. Each territory here has it's own lake or creek, both water sources provided depending on it's location. Because the lands here are so flat, there is limited shelter among the few trees that sprout.

The mountain ranges of Atera are not for the weak. The lands are harsh and rugged, making them almost impervious to challengers as most would not wish to take up territory here and they certainly don't see it worth fighting for. Snow-capped mountains and a hard, rocky surface take up all of the lands here, though each territory does has a small valley for grazing. However, the grass here is dry and grows very short. Most herds here are small due to the limited grazing areas, but some herds have been known to hold greater numbers. Temperatures here range in the negatives during winter months and tend to mimic average fall weather during the summer and spring months. Snowstorms pass through during various times throughout the year thanks to cold air and snow coming down from the mountaintops. Caves are the only form of shelter on these lands, and they are few and far between.

Located close to the mountain ranges are the valleys of Atera. These valleys grow tall grass and contain many winding streams. Red and yellow flowers grow in abundance here. Ideal for large herds, these deep valleys are almost favorable to any equine. The sun shines more often than rain falls, but it doesn't seem to upset the balance here. There is a sense of peace and easy-living that comes with these lands.

The red canyons, must like the desert territories, are mostly barren. Almost mountain-like in their size, these canyons provide solid, rocky ground. During the spring, fall and winter, rains come heavily, providing the lands with rivers that run through the canyons. The rivers have been known to dry up during the summer months, when rain comes less frequently. Many herds here move constantly in search of water during the summer. The only grazing areas are located on the canyons tops in large flat areas that grow short, sweet grass. Flowers bloom throughout these areas, and the grass around them tends to be slightly bitter to the taste.

The desert territories are harsh and unforgiving. Temperatures here are scorching all year round and can dip below freezing during the night hours. The landscapes are barren and can range from hard, cracked ground to loose, deep sands. Cacti of various species grows sparsely throughout the territories. Each territory was mapped out carefully to include an oasis, though most of them are small. Grazing around the oasis springs is limited, so smaller herds tend to reside here. The trees that do grow next to the small waters are the only forms of shelter from the beating sun.

The marshland territories are dense and swampy. A mist seems to constantly hang overhead, only breaking apart during the warmest hours of the day. Massive trees grow here, mostly growing from the waters with long branches thick with leaves. The grounds are mostly soggy, with only a few places having completely solid footing. A strange type of grass can be found in some areas that is very thick, but has an almost bitter, salty taste.

Each forest territory here varies in density. While some are thick and difficult to traverse, others are more thin and favorable. Each area contains one or more clearings with small rivers running through each. The forests provide suitable shelter from the elements. Rainfall is also average for these territories and provides relief to equines during the warmer months.

The seaside territories are typically hit or miss. While some offer large grazing areas along the coastline, others are more sparse. There is only one freshwater source per territory and they come in the forms of small lakes and large ponds. A few trees claim areas here in patches, providing some form of shelter from the elements. Storms within these lands can be harsh, especially when hurricanes form. Otherwise, these lands are essentially a paradise.
